What matters most is finding an organization that’s a good fit for your interests, strengths, and personality, along with work that you love. At a firm, you represent many different clients and may not have the opportunity to support the same client continuously or even more than once. In-house you become part of a team working to facilitate positive outcomes and regulating risk for one client. You have the opportunity (and are expected) to take a “deep dive” into learning the business to provide the best advice for your client. Many attorneys despise this system, and it’s one of the most common complaints recruiters hear from law firm attorneys. The person best-suited to working in-house is comfortable with uncertainty and making decisions. There is a certain comfort in the checks and balances that come with the hierarchical nature of law firm structure.

Many law firm attorneys have the belief that they will have greater work-life balance going inhouse, and this is often true. In their goal to become a profit center, some in-house legal departments demand long, exhausting hours with a lower level of compensation. While moving in-house can be an excellent and wise move for some attorneys, it can also have its downsides, depending on the company. As in any decision-making process, it is best to understand the full picture before you jump into a new position or discount your current situation.
